Maria Sharapova defeated Nadia Petrova 7-5 6-2 to capture the Generali Ladies on Sunday. It was her fifth tourney victory

Maria has now equalled the most tournaments won in 1 year (she won 5 in 2004) and is now unbeaten in 16 matches dating back to middle of August.
Maria broke Petrova in the 1st game and had a 4-2 lead but Petrova came back to take a 5-4 lead but Maria showed her true champion fighting spirit by saving some set-points and took the set 7-5.
Again Maria was able to break Petrova in the 1st game in the 2nd set and again to lead 5-2, then took the set and the match on her own serve 6-2.
In the rankings Maria moves up to #2 with 3532 points and gained 195 points in Linz. Maria is now 176 points behind Justine Henin-Hardenne in the race and the number 1 is up for grabs in Madrid.
Maria will next head to the Sony Ericcson Championships in Madrid, Spain which begin on November 7th which is the final WTA event of 2006 which features the 8 best players of 2006. Maria won this event when it was held in Los Angeles 2 years ago.
